Weekly Newsletter 2/19-2/21
I am not sending a newsletter home today due to the short week but wanted to update you with any information and important dates that we would normally put on the weekly newsletter.
Classroom News:
We will still take a spelling test this Friday over our new spelling words for this week. We will work on them as much as we can in class but please make sure your child is practicing them at home too. I do have our words for this week on www.spellingcity.com/kpoole01 under Unit 20. Also, we are taking off half a point for each word that has a capital letter that is not supposed to. Please talk to your child about this and make sure they are working on it at home if you know this is something they are struggling with. We have been working all year long on when a capital letter is needed and when it is not as well as I know they worked on this in first grade. I must start holding them accountable for this skill.
What We Are Learning:
Spelling-Our words are regular plurals so we will be adding s, es, and dropping the y and adding -ies to the end of all of our words. For ex: scoops, bushes, trophies.
Reading Workshop-This week we have started reading a chapter book in class in "literature circles". Today Mrs. Timm modeled for the students what literature circles look like, explained what they would be doing, and they read the first chapter together. They also have a journal where they will respond to each chapter they read to build their comprehension skills. The book we are reading is called, "Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Missing Dinosaur Bones". This book will not be coming home with them. We will do all of our reading in class but PLEASE ask them about it at home.. You could ask them who is in their literature circle (they won't find that out until tomorrow), what happened in today's chapter, who the characters are, their favorite part so far, etc.
Writing Workshop-This week we will be writing a letter to the author of the Cam Jansen book we are reading, David Adler. We spent some time this morning brainstorming some ideas for things we can write to him about and questions we can ask him.
Language Arts-We are finishing up our work on adverbs. We should test on adverbs on Friday. An adverb is a word that describes an action verb. Adverbs can tell how, when, or where an action happens. For ex: Jason quickly read the book. HOW did Jason read? -quickly
Math-We are still in the beginning stages of introducing multiplication. This week we are learning all about and working on arrays. Math can be found ALL around us.. Here are some real-life examples of arrays that the kids could find at home, at the grocery store, etc. Rows go across, Columns go up and down.
Important Dates:
2/20 Friday - Book Orders Due!
2/23 Monday - Happy Birthday Nathan Westerman
3/6 Friday - Mrs. Timm's last day in our class
3/10 Tuesday - Pete the Cat author is here!
3/17 Tuesday - End of 3rd 9 weeks
3/18 Wednesday - Next Field Trip (to Science Museum in Little Rock)
P.S. Thank you so much to all who came to visit with me about your child's progress last week at Parent/Teacher conferences. I greatly appreciate your time and support!

Legos are a very fun way to practice arrays. This picture shows 2 rows of 4=8 and 4 columns of 2=8.

TESTS!
Parents,
First I want to apologize for not getting this week's spelling words on Spelling City until today. I completely forgot and did not realize it until this morning! I guess that "Full Moon" has had an affect on me as well. I will do better to get our words on there every Monday morning!
-Ms. Poole
Every Thursday during computer time the kids practice their spelling words on Spelling City in preparation for their test the next day, BUT last week we had many low spelling test grades. Please make sure your child is practicing their spelling words in some way at home every night (not necessarily writing them down 3 times). There are many other ways that they can practice them at home other than just writing them down repeatedly. Yes, they do need practice writing these words but we do not want them writing them so many times that they begin to have a dislike for writing. One thing that I know works for some students/parents is having the child spell the words out loud (kind of like a spelling bee). Check out these websites for some ideas on how your child can practice their spelling words at home!

Make sure tonight that you remind your children that on their spelling test tomorrow if they have any capital letters on their words they will be counted off half a point since that is something we have been going over and working on all...year...long! ALSO, very important if the word is a open compound word then they must have space between the words. For example: post office If the word is a hyphenated compound word then they MUST have a hyphen in between the two words. For example: part-time.

MATH TEST
We are taking our BIG end of Module 5 Math test tomorrow. We reviewed together in class yesterday and AGAIN today! We have asked the students BOTH days to go over that review with their parents at home and have them sign it! Please check their work, ask them how they solved certain problems, and have them do a few more practice problems similar to some of the ones that are on the review. Thank you so much for your help and cooperation. I know they are going to do a great job tomorrow after preparing so hard and for so long!
