Happy Thanksgiving & Parent/Teacher Conferences

Don't forget, Thanksgiving break is this week Wednesday the 21st through Friday the 23rd! I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoys their break! Also, there will be no school for students on Monday the 26th due to Parent Teacher conferences!

Everyone should have received a letter yesterday regarding parent/teacher conferences. If you did not get yours or you are not able to attend your scheduled conference time please contact me at the school (870) 898-3711 or by email at kpoole@ashdownschools.org to make other conference arrangements!

We spent yesterday and today doing lots of fun and educational Thanksgiving activities in class. Be sure and ask your child about the pumpkin pie that we WON in a contest today in the first grade hallway!

Allen Booth brought a special leaf this morning to show us that he found at his home! What was unique about this leaf was that it was HUGE! It was literally as big as his head!

A SoApY Friday!

I am sure by today your children have probably told you about the science experiment we did this past Friday, but in case they haven't please ask them about it! First, we predicted and wrote about what we thought would happen if we put a bar of soap in the microwave. Next, we put our bar of Ivory soap on a piece of wax paper in the microwave for 2 minutes! The soap expands, and the longer we left it in there the bigger it got! Next, we crumbled the big pile of soap up into a bowl and added a little bit of warm water! This created kind of a doughy texture, then the kids used cookie cutters to make their own personal bars of soap that they will be bringing home today! We had a great time and here are some pictures to prove it!

Week of Nov. 12-16

This week we are working on spelling words that have three letter blends spl-, squ-, & scr- at the beginning of the word. For example: scram, splint, and squid.

Last Thursday we took a walk around our campus to collect 15 leaves for our leaf color bar graph we were making! Here are some pictures from that afternoon!

Don't forget, Thanksgiving Break next Tuesday Nov. 21-Friday Nov. 23! Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

A Successful First Week!

The first week of school is complete! The kids were wonderful and did an awesome job adjusting to a new grade and a new teacher!  This past week was mainly spent learning and practicing classroom rules and procedures!  We also worked on Math, started our "centers", and did assessments in Writing, Spelling, and Reading to see where each child is currently at developmentally!

Every morning we take attendance on the promethean board. When the kids come in they move their apple to either sack lunch or tray lunch to let me know they are here and what they are eating!  This has seemed to be quick, easy, allows for maximum instruction time, and the kids enjoy it!  Here is what it looks like..

Here are some pictures of the kids working in our centers!

We also sorted our shoes and classified them into different groups!

I thought it was funny that the girls lined their groups up and the boys just tossed theirs in a big pile!

Remember we are still collecting box tops to help raise money for our school!  If you did not get a pouch to put your box tops in while at open house please send a note letting me know you need one !
It looks like this..

Students will start working to be chosen as Star Student this week!  This week the student I choose to be Star Student will be based on R-E-S-P-E-C-T!  Please talk to your child about what it means to be respectful and ways they could show respect to others at school and everywhere they go!

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!
